11 Travel Essentials That Will Simplify Your Journeys

In the beginning of my journey I almost did not know any essentials that were made exactly for this purpose. At times, this made travelling more difficult and sometimes also more expensive. As soon as I discovered these little helpers, travelling became so much easier, lighter and smarter.

The list is not long, but that is the purpose behind it. Do not take so many things with you, only those that are really useful for you. I have used all these things regularly and I would always take them with me again on my journeys.

A normal towel would probably already occupy a third of your backpack. These special travel towels are incredibly compact. I even carried two with me as they are not bigger than an orange – crazy, isn’t it?

These really do not take up any space: When they are empty, you can fold them as thin as a piece of paper. Like that you can fill up your bottles whenever you need, e.g. in countries with drinkable tap water. I do not need to mention how much money you will save with that, right?

There is nothing better to put your backpack in order. Packing Cubes are super light und you can comfortably separate your belongings in the different cubes. T-shirts in one of the cubes, trousers in the other, etc. Everything is sorted like in a closet!

When you use 2-in-1-backpacks, better take two raincovers with you, one for the small backpack and one for the big one. It is important that you can adjust the size. This small gadget can save all your electronic devices, when you are surprised by a tropical thunderstorm – which is mostly the case as those happen all of a sudden most of the time.

The most important is that you can use it in every country. Another convenience is an integrated USB port.

More practical than a plastic bag that would start to smell bad easily.

How often have you already packed your groceries into the plastic bags of the supermarkets? Save the environment and take a travel shopping bag that you can compress to the size of a bottle of 50 ml.

You can simply strap it onto the outside of your backpack. It is useful when you e.g. need to take an overnight train or bus.

Be comfortable and get a good rest in any kind of transport. No matter if you are in a bus, car, plane or train, you will be glad to have something you can rest your head on. The inflatable travel neck pillows are especially practical as you can just deflate and fold them when you don’t need them. They don’t take up any space in your backpack.

It is very important to be prepared for any kind of situation. A first aid kit should always be part of your packing list. Hopefully you won’t need it, but when you do, you’ll be glad you took it with you.

If you want to take amazing photos during your trip (who doesn’t, right?), you should really consider taking a tripod for your camera with you. Of course, you could only take selfies and ask people to take a picture of you all the time, but let’s be honest: Did anyone ever take the photo exactly the way you wanted to? Either they just cut most of the beautiful background, it’s crooked, etc. With the tripod, you don’t need to worry anymore about any of this. For smaller cameras I recommend the Joby Gorillapod with flexible legs and magnets. You can simply attach it to a street lamp, a fence, set it up on uneven ground… It’s just amazing. For bigger cameras with more weight I recommend the AmazonBasics Leightweight Tripod, which fits perfectly into the Osprey Farpoint 55.

A Sewing Kit it’s small, light, cheap, extremely useful and you should always have it in your backpack whenever you travel. It’s the best way to fix your clothes when an unexpected hole appears or a button of your shirt fell off.

By using these essentials, you will soon notice a difference in the way you are travelling. Not only will your backpack be more organized and lighter, but you will also feel that you have everything you need with you. Consequently, you can concentrate more on your adventures and experiences!

  1. Hi, it’s me again. I stalked the whole website, sorry (: I’m not the travel guru, but a small sewing kit also is really usefull. It happens quite fast, that something gets a hole and it’s so easy to fix it, instead of replacing.

    1. Hi Paola and thank you so much for the Tip! Actually I always had it with me and I just forgot to put it on the list. The Sewing Kit was very useful to me during my journey around the world.
